AI in BIM: How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform MEP Productivity

AI is rapidly changing how people interact with technology and approach complex work. That shift is now beginning to reach MEP construction and the BIM workflows behind it. By expanding the capabilities of specialized modeling software, AI has the potential to reshape what these systems can do and how effectively people can use them. 

AI Can Automate Repetitive BIM Modeling Tasks 

Some of the greatest opportunities for AI in BIM involve automating repetitive modeling and detailing tasks. Over the course of a construction project, tasks such as creating spools, placing supports, and modeling systems may be performed hundreds or thousands of times. Each instance follows a similar process, but minor differences, such as company standards and project requirements, can make the task difficult to automate consistently. 

Traditional rules-based systems require teams to define how the software should respond to each possible condition. As the number of variables increases, these systems can become increasingly complex to configure or too rigid to account for every situation. 

AI adds a layer of reasoning to the process. It can recognize the similarities between repeated tasks while accounting for the minor variations that occur from one instance to the next. This could make it easier for detailers, designers, and modelers to automate more of their work, reduce modeling time, and get information to the field faster.

The challenge grows as contractors introduce more software into their workflows. Each platform has its own interface, terminology, settings, and sequence of commands. To employ these systems effectively, users must learn how to communicate with each one on its own terms. 

AI could reverse that relationship by allowing the software to adapt to the user. A detailer could describe the desired result in natural language, and the AI could determine which tools and commands are needed to complete the task within the appropriate software. This would allow users to focus on what they want to accomplish rather than how to navigate the platform. 

More recently, AI has been used to generate bespoke interfaces for particular workflows within modeling software. Through simple question-and-answer conversations, AI can create interfaces with familiar controls such as buttons, menus, and input fields that are tailored to the specific task the user is trying to accomplish. 

Together, these capabilities could make sophisticated BIM tools easier to use, reduce the effort required to configure automation, and help experienced professionals complete complex work more efficiently. 

AI Can Identify BIM Coordination Issues Earlier 

BIM workflows generate significant amounts of project data, and it can be incredibly difficult to review it for potential problems. One of AI’s most valuable applications may be analyzing this data to identify inconsistencies earlier in the project lifecycle. 

With access to the necessary project information, AI could continuously evaluate models and related data for conditions that require attention. It could flag inconsistencies, surface potential coordination issues, and help identify questions that should be raised through an RFI. 

Finding these issues earlier gives teams more time to respond before they affect fabrication, installation, or other downstream operations. In this role, AI could become the project partner teams have always wanted: one capable of reviewing large amounts of information and calling attention to details that might otherwise be missed. 

Why AI Still Requires MEP Expertise and Project Context 

Discussion around AI commonly falls into one of two extremes. Some people view it as a magical tool that can solve almost any problem. Others dismiss it as another technology buzzword that promises more than it delivers. 

In reality, AI is simply another tool, and the real near-term opportunity lies in using AI to accomplish more of the work that matters most. Its value will depend on the task, the information available, and the expertise of the people applying it. 

AI needs the appropriate context to make decisions and execute tasks, including the relevant BIM data, standards, and constraints. It also requires a clearly defined objective; someone must understand what their team needs to accomplish and be able to describe it accurately to the AI. 

For this reason, collaboration and information sharing will become increasingly important. Construction information is frequently distributed across disconnected systems or restricted by nondisclosure agreements, limiting what AI can use and the value it can provide. As AI becomes more capable, contractors will have even greater reason to organize, connect, and securely share project information. 

Experienced MEP professionals will remain essential throughout this process. Any tool is most effective when used by an expert, unreliable when used by an amateur, and potentially dangerous when used by someone unqualified. Professionals must provide the judgment required to define the task, establish its constraints, and review the results. 

The Best Way to Prepare Is to Start 

Contractors do not need to wait to begin using AI in their BIM workflows. Learning how to apply this technology will require experience, and the best way to gain that experience is through practical use. 

Teams should begin with focused applications where the desired result is clear and an experienced professional can evaluate the output. At the same time, users should avoid placing complete trust in AI. The more they understand how the technology works, the better equipped they will be to recognize its strengths and limitations.
